How You Can Be Supportive of the LGBT Community

  • Do not tolerate homophobic comments and jokes in the classroom or the workplace.
  • Try to use inclusive language and to include partners at functions where spouses or dates are invited.
  • Avoid the assumption that everyone is heterosexual.
  • Attend events sponsored by gay/lesbian/bisexual organizations to show your support for the GLBT community.
  • Educate yourself. Learn about current social and political issues that affect the GLBT community and discuss these with others.
  • Work with heterosexual students to help them understand that LGBT people are a presence on campus and in society, whether they like it or not.
